Ateneo Wins National Genetics Quiz Contest; MSU-IIT Shines in Extemporaneous Speech

Ateneo de Manila University claimed victory in the National Intercollegiate Genetics Quiz Contest (NIGQC) 2024, where teams from across the country competed in genetics and related fields. Ateneo’s winning team included Jewel Ruther E. Miraña, Aubrey Love F. Labarda, and Kevin V. Tejada. The University of the Philippines – Baguio secured second place with members Trigger John B. Balitang, Marinelle Fernandez, and Razel F. Melendez, while Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), represented by Fahadh P. Abbas, Al Mario L. Sungag, and Sid M. Ortiz, took third place.
The competition featured challenging rounds like “Dogma” and “Genetic Drift” and was held in collaboration with organizations such as the E.T. Yuchengco School of Business Student Council, CEDAW Youth Miriam College Chapter, and UP League of Agricultural Biotechnology Students.
In the NIGQC 2024 Extemporaneous Speech Competition, MSU-IIT’s Zhea Q. Sanchez emerged as the champion, impressing judges with her poise and persuasive speaking skills. Ateneo’s Cielo Marie P. Bautista secured second place, followed by Cavite State University’s Larsen James S. de la Cruz in third.
The event highlighted the participants’ passion for science and their commitment to advancing genetics and biotechnology in the Philippines. Organizers commended the students for their dedication and outstanding performances.
