The Philippines has been leading Southeast Asia in adopting biotechnology, employing a science-based approach to assess the risks of biotech products since 2002.
As such, neighbor countries have benchmarked the country’s regulatory system as a standard for responsibly using this technology, encouraging innovation among Filipino scientists. Over the years, this has become an essential tool for managing the Philippines’ advancements in biotechnology, to maximize its benefits for food security, agriculture, animal welfare, economic growth, consumer health, and biodiversity conservation.
To spur continuous advancements in biotechnology, the International Service for the Acquisition of Agri-biotech Applications (ISAAA), Inc., has collaborated with the Philippine Agriculture and Fisheries Biotechnology Program of the Department of Agriculture (DA Biotech), to educate Filipinos on traditional and modern biotech products developed by Filipino experts.
Through the Pinoy Biotek initiative, ISAAA Inc. and DA Biotech have produced educational materials, including a video titled “Pinoy Biotek Na Tayo!” (We are for Filipino Biotech). This video, presented in Filipino, features interviews with local experts and highlights innovations such as disease detection kits for rice and abaca, embryo culture technology for makapuno (a type of coconut), and induced spawning technology for mudfish.
In a statement, Dr. Rhodora Romero-Aldemita, Executive Director of ISAAA Inc., emphasized the positive impact of biotechnology in the Philippines over the years and urged Filipinos to embrace these advancements for the betterment of agriculture and food security.
