A two-day event called Camp Helix: Agbiotech Boot Camp for STEM Learners and Teachers was recently held at the UPLB Training Center for Tropical Resources and Ecosystems Sustainability. The event sought to further disseminate knowledge and promote interest in agriculture and modern biotechnology among the students and teachers in STEM courses.
Some 30 participants from the University of the Philippines Rural High School and San Pablo City Science Integrated High School attended the seminar spearheaded by the ISAAA Inc.
During the opening, Dr. Rhodora Romero-Aldemita, Executive Director of ISAAA Inc., said she is confident that exposing participants to biotech research would inspire more students to pursue biotech-related careers and better equip teachers teaching the subject.
Dr. Paul C. Limson, Director of the Philippines Agriculture and Fisheries Biotechnology Program, underscored that youth can help in shaping public perception to promote acceptance of biotech. He stated that the future of biotechnology depends on young researchers and scientists.
The camp included lectures from experts such as Mr. Reimond S. Corona of the National Committee on Biosafety, Dir. Fides Marciana Z. Tambalo of UPLB Biotech, among others. Participants went on to tour biotech institutions in Los Baños, including the International Rice Genebank in IRRI and the Enzyme Laboratory in UPLB-Biotech.
In collaboration with the DA Biotech Program on the “Know the Science” project, the boot camp was co-organized with UPLB Biotech, UP GRAINS, and UP LABS. The event moderators were Janine Cyren Escasura and Clement Dionglay from ISAAA Inc.
