JOSE G. BURGOS, JR. AWARDS FOR BIOTECHNOLOGY JOURNALISM

Formerly known as the Gawad Galing for Biotech Journalism, the Jose G. Burgos, Jr. Awards for Biotechnology Journalism was first launched in 2005 as an annual event held during National Biotech Week. The award is given to journalists who have made significant contributions in disseminating knowledge about biotechnology. One of the main challenges in the field of biotechnology is connecting innovations with the masses, which is why Biotech For Life promotes this initiative to recognize the media’s outstanding contributions in advancing scientific inquiry through online and print journalism.

Jose G. Burgos, Jr. (1941-2003) was a well-known journalist and farmer who was awarded “International Journalist of the Year” by Inter Press Service in 1986 and named one of the “50 Press Freedom Heroes of the Century” by the International Press Institute (IPI). He earnestly worked as a farmer during the last 16 years of his life, with the hope that research written in a universal language would contribute to increasing farmers’ income.
